Four Garage Door Safety Tips

Four Garage Door Safety Tips

Your garage door is typically the largest moving object in your home. Maintained garage doors protect your cars from bad weather and provide security. For most home owners, a garage door is a standard appliance.  While garage doors are not typically “dangerous” there are a few safety tips you should follow, especially if you have kids or pets. At North Metro Garage your comfort, safety, and satisfaction are important to us.  In this article, North Metro Garage will explore four garage door safety tips.

Check Sensors

Ensure your sensors are functioning properly. Faulty or failed sensors are one of the most common reasons for a garage door injury. You can check your sensors by simply laying a disposable object (i.e. cardboard box) in front of your door’s path, and press the close button. If your sensors are working properly, your door should either stop or reverse off the object. Also, check the sides of your garage door to ensure the sensors are mounted no higher than 6 inches off the ground.

It’s important to note: if the photo eye of your sensors are blocked, your sensors will likely fail.

Operation

For most adults, garage door operation is easy and simple. But if you have kids it’s smart to make sure they know how to operate your garage door. Take some time to show the younger members of your family how to open and close your door. During this lesson ensure your children know your garage door isn’t a toy. This simple garage door lesson will protect your children from faulty user errors. It will also prevent your door from being overused.

Regular Maintenance

Regularly maintaining your garage door helps ensure that it operates smoothly and lasts longer. Maintenance typically includes washing your garage door, oiling its tracks, and ensuring your garage door is still on its tracks. Doing these few things will keep your garage door safe and performing well. Regular maintenance is important practice for all of your appliances. Ask the professionals at North Metro Garage how to extend your door’s life through regular maintenance.

It’s interesting that regular maintenance can help prevent problems in a garage door. I didn’t realize that there are so many things that could go wrong with a garage door and I want to make sure mine lasts a long time. I’ll have to keep these tips in mind just to ensure I don’t have any major failures that cause my door to stay open or shut.

It is good to know that one should ensure that sensors are functioning properly when it comes to garage door safety. I did not know that faulty or failed sensors were the most common reason for a garage door injury. Another thing to do would be to wait and make sure that your garage door closes all the way to prevent unwanted visitors from entering your home.

Thanks for the tips on keeping your garage door operating safely. My wife and I are planning on having a new garage door put in, and we want to make sure we know how to keep it functioning safely. I like that you mentioned to walk your kids through how a garage door works. That way, they will know how to use it and avoid accidents.
